Magical New Children’s Musical "Life on Appetite Street" Serves Up Health, Heart, and Puppetry for San Diego Families
Step into a whimsical, beachside world where the buildings are made of giant pretzels, the rooftops sprout fresh produce, and the air smells like cozy, starchy magic!
Life on Appetite Street is a vibrant, health-conscious children’s theater production designed to delight families and young audiences. Through colorful puppetry, catchy music, and larger-than-life storytelling, this production transforms the important lessons of nutrition, hydration, and active movement into an unforgettable theatrical adventure.
Crafting the Characters
The amazing puppets of Life on Appetite Street are designed directly from the vivid illustrations in our original children's book. To make them durable for dynamic live acting, we craft each piece using a special, extra-strong papier-mâché recipe combined with premium fabrics. Every custom puppet is engineered from the inside out to fit the unique hand size of its specific actor, ensuring smooth, expressive, and highly interactive puppet performances on stage!
Catchy Beats & Sweet Melodies: The Music & Sound
The vibrant soundscape of Life on Appetite Street is brought to life by a stellar creative team. The show's catchy original theme and songs are co-created by performing arts educator Nancy Ross and composer Jesus Gonzalez, blending lively melodies with energetic beats that perfectly capture the bustling joy of the food shops. Their custom music sets the ultimate rhythm for the story, guiding young audiences all the way to the town's high-energy dance celebration, The Great Edible Ball.
Complementing the original songs is the immersive, dynamic stage sound designed by award-winning Southern California sound designer Salvador Zamora. Salvador weaves audio seamlessly into stage movement, building suspense during Dr. Artifisher's schemes and enhancing every live puppet performance so families feel like they are standing right on Appetite Street.
Our Amazing Set & Props
The enchanting scenic environment of Life on Appetite Street transports audiences directly into a colorful, sensory-filled world. Co-designed by Zlatko Mitev and creator Kremena Lefterova, the visual backdrop is heavily rooted in the original whimsical illustrations from the children's book.
To bring the magical town to life with high utility and flexibility, the team crafted the main set using sturdy Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) configured into lightweight, folding screens resembling a traditional paravan. This smart, folding partition style allows the vibrant street facades to double as functional stage flats that are exceptionally easy to transport between local community centers and venues.
To fully immerse young theatergoers, the performance perimeter is uniquely outlined with larger-than-life "food" props that separate the audience from the action. This clever use of space sets the physical stage boundaries while reminding families of the fresh, delicious lifestyle at the core of our story.
Our production brings a truly unique experience to young audiences by combining immersive puppetry, where favorite characters come to life through dynamic and interactive puppet performances, with a wonderfully "delicious" stage design that uniquely lines the entire playing area with colorful food props to pull families right into the scene. Through this whimsical setting, healthy habits are made incredibly fun as kids learn firsthand how proper hydration and fresh foods lead to a happy, high-energy life, making the entire adventure perfect for young minds and tailored specifically for children ages 5–10 and their families.
